Zohan: Disco, disco!

Yesterday I went to go see “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” movie with one of my cousins. It’s another one of Adam Sandler’s satirical movies: this time, about the tension between the Jewish and the Muslim people in Israel/Palestine. Of course, there was humor in it: Sandler plays the protagonist, Zohan, who is a counter-terrorist wanting to follow his lifelong dream of becoming a hairstylist (“I want to make people silky smooth”). Everyone around him thinks his way of life should be to continue on as a counter-terrorist, that being a hairstylist was a froufrou job. So Zohan fakes his own death and runs off to NYC, where he tries to start his dream career into the hairstyling world. At first it’s a tough road, but as usual, things end up working out in the end. A small cameo appearance by Mariah Carey occurs near the end of the movie.

I thought the movie was played out pretty well; Sandler and his fellow actors all seemed to do pretty well with Middle Eastern accents–the accents were convincing enough to me anyway. They played up on some stereotypes, but as usual there was a moral to the whole story. I liked the movie, at least for its humor if not other aspects.

Watching this movie made me really wonder though: Is Adam Sandler an eccentric genius? I feel like his more recent movies tackle some rather sticky issues (take last year’s “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” about gay marriage). Somehow, Sandler is always able to weave a crazy satirical story and in the end give it some sort of clever storyline. The endings may be cheesy, but they work.

Women’s Health Magazine: Review

I am not sure if I have mentioned this before, but for those of you who may not know already, one of my biggest hobbies these days has been exercising/eating well/leading a healthier lifestyle. This whole journey started almost two years ago, and along the way I have been subscribing to health/fitness magazines in order to keep me motivated.

Near the end of last year, I started receiving some offers from magazines that I was not subscribed to; I assume they received my mailing information from my subscriptions at Fitness, SELF, and Weight Watchers Magazines. One of these offers was from Women’s Health: they offered a free trial issue plus a booklet with mini-guides/articles on different aspects of health. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try out another health/fitness magazine; after all, for the past couple of years I had been curious about Women’s Health after all.

Only recently, I was able to peruse through the trial issues I received from Women’s Health. The verdict in the end: the magazine is okay, has some good tidbits of information, but I think overall I don’t like the magazine too much. The layout of it makes it appear like a tabloid, which seemed to distract and take away the authenticity of each article. The articles themselves did not seem meaty enough to me.

I wonder if the target audience of the magazine is meant for women older than I am? The cover models are youthful looking (around 20s-30s), yet perhaps the aim of the magazine is for women in their late 30s-40s instead. I’m not too sure; I did not feel “fulfilled” with the articles I read in the magazines though.

I guess I am at least glad that I was able to read a couple of issues before I decided to jump in and subscribe to this magazine. Not saying that the magazine is bad, but it probably just doesn’t have the type of information that I need and want at the moment. I’ll re-visit it again in a few years time.

feelings My San Francisco Chronicles travel

Leaving the city for a few days.

Today I headed out of San Francisco to go to Sacramento for a few days–my cousins are graduating from high school tomorrow, so I figured I should take the trip in to visit them and the rest of my relatives. I realized recently that I hadn’t left San Francisco since I arrived back from Japan; people say they start to feel restless/a little crazy if they’ve been in San Francisco for too long (with no vacation out of the city/Bay Area).

I could understand that sentiment, but I still could not help but feel a little sad/homesick as I watched the city grow farther and farther away while I crossed the Bay Bridge on the Amtrak bus. The scenery passing by on the train was even more dramatic, changing from bay views to farmland.

Perhaps I can never feel like I can adapt to life outside of San Francisco anymore. Despite the fact that I have only lived here for a year, I find that I can see myself settling down here for good (after I do a little more traveling, though).

Perhaps I have really planted my heart in San Francisco.

drink stores tea time

Another gem: a store of tea!

No thanks to my friend here in San Francisco, I find myself becoming obsessed with tea more and more. Today I tagged along with her to go to the Lupicia store in the mall downtown. When we first walked in, we were offered free samples of some iced teas they had. Delicious, just the right amount of flavor. Then, we proceeded to peruse through the store. My friend was trying to find a gift for her friends, so I just poked around and browsed the small store.

There were different displays for featured teas; I found the “Matcha” display with some information on the tea ceremony in Japan and different products featured. Apparently, if a customer purchased at least $10 worth of the green tea products, a free tea whisk was included in the order! I couldn’t pass this offer, so I bought three bags of green tea powder (in small packets, even!) and got my free tea whisk. I also went ahead and bought some tea bags of the “Sakuranbo”/Cherry flavored teas. Yum, yum.

I never thought I could feel so excited about tea before…

customers Hot Dog Days observation Work Diaries

"Can you please die?"

A guy approached the hot dog stand at work today and was talking on his phone; in the middle of his conversation, he asked me for a Diet Pepsi, so I immediately quoted the price to him: “1.50, please.” The guy’s eyes widened and he proceeded to comment on the exorbitant price to his friend, saying “I’m paying freaking $1.50 for a can of Diet Pepsi! Isn’t that insane?”

He then hands me his $20 bill, which I had to check for authenticity (it’s standard protocol for us to check all big bills). He continues to make commentary to his friend, saying “AND the girl is checking my $20 bill to make sure I didn’t make it just today! Oh my GOSH!” (Yes, the man was rather flamboyant). Finally, he gets off the phone and says to me, “Oh my gosh, can you die now?”

I gave him a look of shock, but I could tell he was joking (kind of…). Then he rambled on about the economy, talking about how, “How can you charge so much for a soda when the economy is in shambles?” And all I could say was “Well, I don’t set the prices, sir…” Then he ended on a nice/weird note, saying, “Well, I hope you will make A LOT of money with your cart…good location, by the way!”

And then he pranced off.
