Zohan: Disco, disco!

Yesterday I went to go see “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan” movie with one of my cousins. It’s another one of Adam Sandler’s satirical movies: this time, about the tension between the Jewish and the Muslim people in Israel/Palestine. Of course, there was humor in it: Sandler plays the protagonist, Zohan, who is a counter-terrorist wanting to follow his lifelong dream of becoming a hairstylist (“I want to make people silky smooth”). Everyone around him thinks his way of life should be to continue on as a counter-terrorist, that being a hairstylist was a froufrou job. So Zohan fakes his own death and runs off to NYC, where he tries to start his dream career into the hairstyling world. At first it’s a tough road, but as usual, things end up working out in the end. A small cameo appearance by Mariah Carey occurs near the end of the movie.

I thought the movie was played out pretty well; Sandler and his fellow actors all seemed to do pretty well with Middle Eastern accents–the accents were convincing enough to me anyway. They played up on some stereotypes, but as usual there was a moral to the whole story. I liked the movie, at least for its humor if not other aspects.

Watching this movie made me really wonder though: Is Adam Sandler an eccentric genius? I feel like his more recent movies tackle some rather sticky issues (take last year’s “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” about gay marriage). Somehow, Sandler is always able to weave a crazy satirical story and in the end give it some sort of clever storyline. The endings may be cheesy, but they work.

Women’s Health Magazine: Review

I am not sure if I have mentioned this before, but for those of you who may not know already, one of my biggest hobbies these days has been exercising/eating well/leading a healthier lifestyle. This whole journey started almost two years ago, and along the way I have been subscribing to health/fitness magazines in order to keep me motivated.

Near the end of last year, I started receiving some offers from magazines that I was not subscribed to; I assume they received my mailing information from my subscriptions at Fitness, SELF, and Weight Watchers Magazines. One of these offers was from Women’s Health: they offered a free trial issue plus a booklet with mini-guides/articles on different aspects of health. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to try out another health/fitness magazine; after all, for the past couple of years I had been curious about Women’s Health after all.

Only recently, I was able to peruse through the trial issues I received from Women’s Health. The verdict in the end: the magazine is okay, has some good tidbits of information, but I think overall I don’t like the magazine too much. The layout of it makes it appear like a tabloid, which seemed to distract and take away the authenticity of each article. The articles themselves did not seem meaty enough to me.

I wonder if the target audience of the magazine is meant for women older than I am? The cover models are youthful looking (around 20s-30s), yet perhaps the aim of the magazine is for women in their late 30s-40s instead. I’m not too sure; I did not feel “fulfilled” with the articles I read in the magazines though.

I guess I am at least glad that I was able to read a couple of issues before I decided to jump in and subscribe to this magazine. Not saying that the magazine is bad, but it probably just doesn’t have the type of information that I need and want at the moment. I’ll re-visit it again in a few years time.

Enviga: Does it burn calories?

Lately I have taken interest in the Enviga green tea drink. It boasts that it can help “burn calories”, but that’s only one reason why I have taken interest in it. I also just wonder–does it taste good?

I remember when the drink first came out, Nestle/Coca-Cola were advertising the drink as having “negative calories”. This caused a lot of controversy in the health industry, with specialists saying that it’s “impossible” for any food/drink to have negative calories (at least, processed foods/drinks; I do believe celery has negative calories?). So it seems that the company has now taken on the approach that the drink helps “burn calories” instead.

I tried the berry flavor last weekend and liked the crisp taste of the green tea. Well, I cannot really say it was “tea” anymore since there was barely any hint of the actual green tea in the drink. Do I know if I burned calories from drinking the drink? I’m not exactly sure…

On the can itself, it states that “three cans per day of enviga have been shown to increase calorie burning by 60-100 calories in healthy normal weight 18-35 year olds.” So, in order to burn up to just 100 calories, one has to consume three cans in one day. Which means, roughly each can burns around 35 calories a day.

Hardly enough to make much of a difference in terms of burning calories; for someone looking to lose weight/watch their diet, best bet would be to exercise more and consume less food/drink calories (within a reasonable range).

I personally find enviga just to be a fun drink for me to drink every once in awhile; it’s not like I will subscribe to the theory of it helping me to burn calories. I can probably burn more calories if I added ice to the drink (ice cubes actually do help you burn more calories, according to the Mindless Eating book I read earlier this month).

Mentos: Gum…?

I stumbled upon this little creature at Walgreen’s yesterday morning: Mentos Gum. Since it was flashing “NEW!” I figured to try it out.

I finished the whole 15 pcs today…

No, the gum really isn’t that good actually.

It’s chewy and has good flavor for the first minute, but then…the flavor leaves very very quickly. I had to spit the gum out after two minutes or so since the flavor was already long gone.

Sometimes I really wonder about Mentos in general. They claim they are the “chewy mint” but their “mints” don’t even freshen your breath really. Same goes for their gum–no fresh feeling. They try to fool people into thinking they help freshen your breath but in actuality they are just candies in disguise.

I have to say, the gum was only addicting due to the initial burst of flavor, but afterwards, the thrill is gone. Sigh.

FRS Peach Mango

Bought a can of FRS Peach Mango in San Mateo and tried it out. For about a month or so, I had been curious about this since my Hungry Girl newsletters harped a lot about FRS being a healthy energy drink. They are still offering free trials of their products, but I have been hesitant to sign up for them since apparently they begin to charge your credit card after the trial period is over.

Anyway, I tried the FRS drink out, and it was decent–I forgot to shake it up, so that might have altered the taste a little. Not too strong, not too bland–seemed to hit the spot, at least for the moment. I couldn’t really tell if it really made me feel more energized or not, though. I did go out and walk for an hour after I had the drink, just so I would spend some of that energy for something good.

Only 25 calories and they seem to feature a lot of healthy benefits and different flavors. I wouldn’t mind trying out this beverage again in the future.
