ATA Student Film Screening; Taste of San Francisco

Tonight I went with a friend to a screening of some local student films. The event was held at ATA (Artists’ Television Access) in the Mission; we essentially watched films from students of City College, Cogswell, and from the Art Institute of California, SF.

My friend and I only stayed for the first half, but I have to say, I felt pretty impressed by the level of professionalism of the films we watched. I think it was my first time to see well-executed student films; I had a flashback to when I watched some student films back at my university three years ago, and I remember that, even though the films might have had good concepts, the executions still showed a lot of amateurism. These films tonight, however, could have passed for close to professional filmmaker quality (at least to the common person’s eyes). There was a good mix of genres, from chick flicks to suspense and even a random music video.

Actually, these past couple of days have been spent experiencing the “real” San Francisco. Been mingling with more locals and seeing more of the non-touristy scene. I somehow find myself involved in artistic adventures as well; after all, yesterday I was in a music video, and today, I attended this film screening. Perhaps this is all a sign that I should let myself dive back into the arts since I neglected that passion once I entered college.

Toy Soldiers Music Video

Tonight was an interesting night; my friend’s friend invited us along to participate in the filming of indies band Toy Soldiers’ newest music video.

I am probably not allowed to reveal too much from the video, but in short, we were dancing on an old, decorate school bus and just having a good time. I wish I had dressed up a bit more, but then again, I was not even aware of participating in the video until 15 minutes before the filming began.

The filming took a total of two hours or so; the song was pretty cool to listen to, even after a billion times of playbacks. Hope to see the finished work sometime!

Hungry Girl in San Francisco.

Today after work I managed to go see Hungry Girl aka Lisa Lillien give a talk and sign her new book at Borders in Union Square. I don’t remember how long I have been following her newsletters, but every time I receive them I feel like I’m more well-informed on certain foods. The swap recipes make me realize how really unhealthy most average sweets/general foods are in terms of fat content and calories. Insanity…

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the whole session due to work ending around 7pm. Still, I was able to grab some free samples/coupons and get my book signed by Lillien. A great way to end a long 10-hour workday, indeed!

"Where is…?"

How many times do I have to say this: the hot dog cart is NOT an information booth. Please DO NOT ask me for directions to the Apple Store, Macy’s, Chinatown, et. al. Even if I do know, I do not need to tell you since you are not even a paying customer.

I mean, seriously, why do people not look on a map or at least attempt to find the places for themselves first? I would be more accommodating if they were to tell me that they had been searching for a long time, but most people just approach me and grunt “Where is *insert location here*?!?!” And when I tell them “I don’t know” they just frown at me and act pissed off that I don’t know.

I’m sorry I do not know San Francisco so well, but then again, all the places you ask for I don’t even frequent. Look it up on your map, or go to an actual information booth.

Sunset yesterday…

Through my windows last night, I could see this pink glow after the sunset, so I looked out and sure enough, the sky was pink and gorgeous. I could not help but feel amazed at the beauty of nature, even living here in the city.
