Hot Dog Days My San Francisco Chronicles rant tourists Work Diaries

Chaos with the Cable Car

Today, for some reason, the Powell-Mason Cable Car line was not working, so that equaled crappy business for the hot dog cart. As a result as well, I got so many questions from frantic tourists who were wondering “Why or why were the cable cars not running?!” The MUNI Cable Car workers had a small sign up by the waiting area, but it was not noticeable enough. They kept their ticket booth open until 4pm, but that was that.

In many ways, they could have done more. Sure, perhaps these breakdowns happen frequently for them and they feel they do not need to answer tourists when tourists ask “Why is it not running?” But it’d help if they made the news more noticeable/public so people would not be left either standing there stupidly waiting for a nonexistent cable car to arrive or asking the same question over and over and over.

It became irritating near the end of the day; people wanted to know why it was not running, and you know what, I didn’t have the answer to that, and I probably never will since I do not even work with the cable car people. I feel like tourists assume that I gain this sort of information via osmosis, but sadly I have to burst their bubble on that idea.

Favorite foods.

I notice whenever I dine out with my friends, I tend to choose Asian cuisine over the usual pasta, sandwiches, etc. I also notice that, when it comes to Asian cuisine, I tend to prefer Korean or Thai.

I wonder, why is that?

I enjoy Chinese cooking/food any day since I grew up with it; I’m perfectly fine with Japanese and Vietnamese foods. So why is it almost always Korean or Thai?

There are some things at Korean restaurants which I feel are rather unique for Asian cuisine; for example, all of the starter/”appetizer” dishes they provide, including kimchi and other pickled vegetables. The sizzling hot pots are always divine, and the spices/flavors are just one of a kind. Plus, I feel like most of the foods I probably can’t make on my own at home without the help of a Korean friend.

Thai food is probably some form of comfort food for me; I used to always go to this one Thai place back when I was in school. The flavors also strike me as being more unique than some other Asian cuisines–I like spicy foods, and I like the curries.

I probably stay away from “All-American” cuisine these days because of how much I had of it while I was growing up. I remember ordering out a lot with my siblings, and we’d gorge ourselves on pizza rolls, pizza, huge sandwiches, etc. They’re not foods that necessarily satisfy my palate these days; maybe once in awhile, I’ll consider the foods for a meal, but not every week. Plus, some of the foods I can make at home anyway, so why waste the money to go out and buy something on the pricier side when I know I have the ability to cook it myself?

My San Francisco Chronicles weather

Hot in San Francisco

The first official day of summer, and the temperatures in San Francisco are around 90 degrees. It’s insanity! While working today, so many people bought ice cold drinks from me and kept complaining about the heat. San Francisco rarely becomes so warm, so people are not used to it.

It’s amusing to see how fickle people are about the weather in San Francisco. I have become one of those people–if it gets above 70 degrees I complain that it’s a bit too hot, and if it goes below 40, I’m chattering my teeth. Since when did I become used to such moderate weather? After all, I’ve been in over 100 degree weather (with humidity) before, and I have been in below zero degree weather as well (could feel my nose freezing up right when I walked outside…).

I suppose when people grow accustomed to one area, one climate, they tend to forget the other climates they had lived in before.

H n M Tokyo Competition?

So…while I was downtown today, I passed by the H&M store and noticed a huge sale going on; I sent a memo to myself (via Twitter) about going back to the store ASAP to take advantage of the sale. I completely forgot about that memo until just now, when I went back to my Twitter page and saw the memo. Then, I decided I would check the H&M website to see if they would have information about the sale…

I clicked “US” and it led to this screencap I am presenting to you. Wait, what? A competition to represent H&M in Tokyo in September? HUH!? I thought at first I had clicked on the wrong country, but hm, I did indeed click on “US”. I didn’t even know about this; so I’m guessing the contest is one of those “submit your own video” and users vote on who will win. Fun! Perhaps I should send in a video….but I feel a little nervous about it. Then again, what do I have to lose?

Anyway, just passing along some information. =)

Waiting; Impulses.

Ever have that feeling where you feel like all you’re doing is waiting around?

You try to keep yourself busy, running errands, reading, writing, etc., but you do all of this because you are waiting.

Waiting for an answer, waiting for something to happen.

Waiting is time consuming, waiting does nothing.

When I am forced to wait for something (something that could alter my current situation), I feel so anxious. I feel like I should be doing more than I am, but I have to step back and realize that sometimes, waiting is necessary.

Being impulsive would be bad, especially when things are all misinterpreted.

It’s so hard to wait, though. So very hard.
